The fool and the adventure of beginnings: Why your July deserves a trip

A new month begins today. It’s July. Just in time for the first day, we have a card of new beginnings. The Fool is the beginning of the Major Arcana. He bears the number 0. The number 0 is underestimated by many, as it means that something has no value. But there is something special about this number. It has neither a beginning nor an end. Of course, we all start somewhere when we write it down, but once it is finished, it is infinite.

Every new phase in our lives, every new job, every new task, a new apartment—everything has a beginning. There is this point of departure, and it is up to us to turn these beginnings into moments of folly. Why moments of folly? Quite simply because the fool embarks on his journey with ease. This card represents precisely this ease, and perhaps also a touch of naivety. But isn’t that exactly what makes a journey exciting? Some of us love to plan. Everything is thought out down to the smallest detail, and in addition to Plan A, there is at least one Plan B, usually more. Last year, I myself thought and acted this way.

This way of thinking has now disappeared. I realized that all this planning was just making me ill. I was dealing with situations before they happened. But what was much worse was that I was playing out possible scenarios of how the situations might turn out. My brain was in a constant state of thinking, to the point that it was completely overloaded. But when something happened that I hadn’t considered, that’s when things really took off. Immediately, the program was replayed for the new situation, and the hundredth plan turned into thousands.

Of course, I still plan today. I organize my appointments, know when I’m at work and when I have time for my customers. There’s also a little preparation depending on the appointment, but that’s it in terms of planning. I no longer play out a simulator in my head that then ties me down. What if it starts raining spontaneously? Well, then you just look for a dry place. Does someone cancel spontaneously? Sure, you can get annoyed, but sometimes life doesn’t go as planned, and the universe gives you unplanned time. This time is free, a gift, so to speak. What do I do in situations like this? First, I listen to myself to see what else I feel like doing. Then I do whatever comes up, and even if it’s a nap, why not? After all, it’s my time.

When we look at the „Financial Security“ card, this lightheartedness is somewhat dampened. Finances are a serious topic; that’s how I grew up, and probably many of you did too. „Money doesn’t grow on trees!“ That was the phrase I heard over and over again when I wanted to buy something seemingly unnecessary. But today, I say to you, treat yourself to something small. Maybe you have a bakery nearby where you only buy something on special occasions because it’s a little more expensive. Or maybe you’ve had your eye on a book for a while that you’d like to buy? Today, I would say quite clearly: go for it and enjoy this moment to the fullest. But let me emphasize this before anyone gets any silly ideas: A LITTLE SOMETHING.

As much as we may be guided by the lightheartedness of the fool, we should be sensible when it comes to money. If you can’t think of anything off the top of your head that would make you happy, or because you recently bought something else, then feel free to enjoy it retroactively. Or celebrate your grocery shopping today. Put something in your basket that you would never normally treat yourself to. Today is all about having fun.

Before you go to bed tonight, try the following thought experiment:

Imagine that you are going on a trip tomorrow, a real adventure. To make it more fun, immerse yourself in a fantasy world. Where do you have to go tomorrow? Is it work or are you meeting friends? What are your appointments? Give each of them a fantastic title. Meeting with the boss? How about „The Dangerous Dragon“ or „The Giant Cave.“ If you’re going out to eat somewhere, give the place the name of a magical tavern. „The Bubbling Cauldron“ or „The One-Eyed Cat“ are pretty cool. Do you have plans with your best friend? Is she more of a princess or a fairy? Maybe she’s a good witch? No matter what you have planned, turn it into an adventure and enjoy the day. Of course, some people might look at you funny because you’re grinning to yourself, but who cares? You’re the jester and this is your adventure.
